INSOMNIA

The noose of longing dissolves the walls of this room

You wake in the night

and count out your slaves

A knot in the heart where no one can reach

You wake in the night

and count out your swords

The water rises three years at an inch

You wake in the night

and count out your days

The date in the calendar passed long ago

You wake in the dark

and count out your bones

The noose of longing dissolves the walls of this room

Dead or alone… deep sleep

sold you out to the merchants of dream

They chain you in solitary,

you dream of the ocean. Banished to the desert,

you dream of the rain

A cloud of images follows your steps

Clubs within hearts, diamonds

within spades… You shuffle the cards

And palm your last breath

From somewhere between sleep and dream

crows swoop from the trees and wires

Beyond the eastern wall

a taxi stalls

Wrapped in a long white shawl

morning comes

Barefoot Nepalis get out

to push
