FIVE BUZZARDS

A man passes by with his skin rib taut

Five buzzards circle overhead

An ax rests with great ease in the skull it chooses

A barber weeps in front of a mirror

Stick with me the heart shouts to the liver

Leave me behind say the feet

to the heart. The man sheltering beneath the bridge

feels the river rise long before he wakes

In the dream I wake from, the dream I wake from goes on

without me. That’s no excuse to tilt the ladder

to the sky, and jump back in

when no one’s

looking. The world is illusion

as long as it lasts,

five buzzards and a stone, two eyeballs

for a song, and merely prelude

when it’s over

    when it’s over”

either the “… for a song” tripped you up
(it was meant to) or you are fixating on what follows
