HAWK MEDICINE

The monkey knows fear

He shrinks from the winged shadows

With the sudden shift in light

he leaps he… Pinned down by meaning I slip free

the letters from the words

and breath by deepening breath ease the vowels

from the consonants

Beneath the eyes, the lips, the fingertips

the first pulses steady and link

as each sound rounds and reverberates

How you soar in the blue expanse!

I could grow old on this rock jealous of the distance

between us. Draw me out, will you?

Closing in turning oblique and near

Your whistled hri muscling through spine

spanning out

lifting my forgotten wings

Will you!

  1. Since the quake I’ve had a dozen close encounters with the hawk that roosts in our poplar trees, but not to knock monkeys, I saw one leap the wires across a road deep in the city a few days ago
