STICK FIGURE MAN

May I be aware of the body
in its immediate surroundings
Instinctively aware
of its stance and disposition
consciously aware,
like a child drawing a stick figure man
with the body as canvas,
brush in hand, from the head down
or from the base of the spine
upwards, in a single sweeping stroke,
and then from the body
outward, along arms and legs
like spokes in a wheel
And then from the extremities
inward –through the palms
back along the length of the arms
into the shoulders. Then through the soles of the feet
along the length of the legs
into the lower back. Then from the butt
along the length of the spine
into the head. From all the extremities
inward to the heart, the open-minded heart,
and to the gut, the steadfast gut.
May I awaken the stick figure man
with the brush of the mind
Shading in the flesh with the inward
outward flow of the breath,
body within body, enlivened and settled,
wakeful and sure
